Visitor Services Officer-Part Time

OVERVIEW:        Provide security to the Museum by implementing security policies and procedures, utilizing de-escalation techniques and providing superior customer service. Assists with Security Department tasks, as assigned. Must be available weekends and late evenings, mostly Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; typically 10-15 hours per week.

FLSA STATUS:    Non-exempt               REPORTS TO: Security Supervisor (NOTE: VSO3s and VSO2s provide oversight while on patrol)



  1. Maintain Working Knowledge: Maintain working knowledge of current policies, procedures, guidelines, processes and security systems in order to correctly implement judgment and actions for protection of art, the safety and security of museum facilities, and provide superior customer service. 
  2. Patrol & Response Duties:  Patrol assigned areas to ensure visitors, volunteers, vendors and staff are following Museum policies and procedures.  Respond and investigate calls and incidents, observed or dispatched, in a respectful, fair, and consistent manner.  Respond to incidents including, but not limited to, disruptive behavior and other violations of Museum policies and procedures.    As appropriate, coordinate with VSO3s and VSO2s to ensure adequate resources are requested for responses. 
  3. Welcoming and Accessible Environment: Contribute to SAM’s equity initiative and act to ensure SAM maintains a welcoming, inclusive and accessible environment for all.
  4. Emergency Response: Respond to building emergencies as directed. 
  5. Equipment / Art Monitor: Observe the art for changes of any kind and follow reporting procedure. 
  6. Customer Service / De-escalation: Provide superior customer service, proactively prevent situations from escalating un-necessarily and de-escalate situations.
  7. Cooperative Relationships: Build and maintain cooperative, respectful and professional relationships across the organization, including with visitors, staff, volunteers, and vendors.
  8. Maintain Records: Obtain, record, and maintain necessary documentation, records and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  9. Security Department Support: Assist with Security Department tasks, as assigned and under the supervision of a Supervisor, VSO3s, VSO2s, or Officer-In-Charge (OIC).
  10. Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned. 


  1. High School graduate or GED. 
  2. Demonstrated customer service skills. 
  3. Must be reliable.
  4. Excellent observation skills; an ability to remain alert and attentive.
  5. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and over the radio.
  6. Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to change in a dynamically moving event-driven environment.
  7. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to make immediate decisions related to carrying out established policies and procedures for security and safety of people, artwork, and Museum facilities in a calm, professional, and tactful manner.
  8. Ability to work with close attention to detail and maintain confidentiality. 
  9. Ability to prepare clear, detailed and accurately written reports.
  10. Ability to pass and maintain Security Background Check clearance.
